Solidarité avec Autistici/Inventati

ENGISH Below

ENGLISH

We stand in solidarity with Autistici Inventati one of the most fabulous tech collective, our peers and friends.

Autistici Inventati has been attacked by the orange dictator who listed them as terrorist organisation engaging the blocade of their domain names and their bank accounts without any discussion from european authorities, some will argue, only one more, but this is very very close to us, as you can see from their origin and history.

What is Autistici Inventati A/I

Autistici Inventati A/I is one of the first autonomous, anti-capitalist and anti-fascist hosting projects in the world. They provide services to a large base of activists accross europe and more and they work in collaboration with the larger network of independant service providers, an important model of what p.s. calls the third technoscape.

The broader impact

The effect of this designation will not be limited to A/I or those directly using their infrastructure. It speaks to an escalation of massive, institutional attacks on safe and secure communication, alternatives to for-profit Big Tech platforms, democratic organising, and more, which will be felt by the digital rights community and the wider civil society.

Concretely, it affects:

- The freedoms of expression, information, assembly and association: A/I’s services are used by a multitude of collectives, campaigners, trade unionists, journalists, researchers, many of whom chose A/I because their work was unsafe or shunned on commercial platforms. Currently, A/I hosts 16,000 mailboxes, 1,500 websites, 5,500 mailing lists, and 10,000 blogs. Not only does attempting to cut off their communications and archives, without due process, undermines Articles 7, 11 and 12 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, it also puts at risk the important work being done by thousands of organisations and collectives.

The target is clearly not just A/I but the wider ecosystem and community they support. These users will not be sanctioned directly but the association with A/I will affect how banks scrutinise their payments, how ‘risky’ they are deemed by researchers and journalists, how ‘suspicious’ they come across while crossing borders – a broad chilling effect delivered through one targeted designation.

The attack over independent service provider as A/I is a visible result of their importance, we will therefore continue to support them and organize more of us.

#We do not need another A/I we need a thousand servers.

Another publication from Le Sabot media, initiating propositions about self hosting among them an initiative BASH replicating their no-blogs website via a nomad.net

A/I may be ending. The story is nowhere near over.

For twenty-five years, #AutisticiInventati showed what it could mean for movements to build and control their own communications infrastructure. Its loss should not send everyone searching for the next single service to replace it.

It should send us looking in a hundred directions.

In Boise, the Boise Autonomous Solidarity Hub is experimenting with one of them. @BASH has put a small independent publication on NomadNet, a system running over Reticulum rather than relying solely on the conventional web. It has articles, archives, submissions and contact functions, reachable through a cryptographic network destination instead of an ordinary domain.

That is not the answer. That’s what makes it interesting.

Other projects are trying other things: cooperative infrastructure, self-managed servers, RSS, mirrors, print, radio, downloadable archives, federated publishing and networks that barely resemble the commercial web at all.

We don’t need to find another A/I. We need to understand how to build a thousand different pieces of what made A/I possible.

Sabot is beginning a living guide to autonomous media and infrastructure, aimed especially at small and rural projects: how to publish, archive, distribute, host, mirror and keep going when a platform, host, domain, provider or collective disappears.

Coming Soon:

A living guide to autonomous publishing, infrastructure and survival

Follow the people experimenting. Follow small radical media. Preserve what matters.

Then build something.

@patrice made a comment that contrasts with my initial perception:

“Yet the A/I collective’s decision can also be viewed as a slap in the face of the Trumpian regime. Like “We shall not play your stupid game”. And with A/I no more, we can hope genuinely new initiatives will see the light, driven by the youngsters of today - the same spirited youngsters the A/I people were 25 years ago. They surely will fill the gap A/I is leaving.”

Although I understand this position, I also do not like that Trump wins at the Whack-a-mole game on his first attempt. I do think A/I work over the years is commendable, and highly regarded ; I do think the collective decision to disengage is respectable. Yet, I think that the Nazi tsunami taking over tech and States around the world cannot be left alone with a defeatist discourse.

We know who they are, what they are, what they do, but I’ve heard in a bookstore in F̷̪̤̋ṟ̵͙̾͗a̷̛̩̎n̴͙͙̿́c̸̙͙̈e̵̪͒, the other day, a woman claiming that “we should try the extreme right, as they’ve never been in power and we don’t know what they’re capable of.” I was shocked. The bookseller replied that “we know what they did in the 1940s.” But she replied, as she was told by extreme right TV stations, that “they’re not the same, absolutely not.” Yes, they are. They’re even worse, since they have both capital and tech on their side now. Tech that, in the 1940s, would have made their job much easier. Once they’re in power, they have no limits. Trump is showing that. No limits. He may be stupid enough to think he can overthrow a 5000 year old power within a couple of weeks, but this also may be a simple distraction from the fact he got us all closer to the brink of war, with a crisis that may ease the enrollment of poor people, the most vulnerable, again, into the war machine.

Antifascists need to be protected because they are the ones who actually repel fascists. But if fascists knock at the door and we just let them do, they will get more confident kicking other doors. What the A/I situation shows is that we’re not ready – we should talk about it, make it clear that we cannot rely only on backchannels and must keep a public discourse. No, antifascism is not terrorism. Imperialism is terrorism. War is terrorism. Capitalism is terrorism. Antifascism is defense against power abuse.
