Illegal Instructions: A Call to Anti-fascist Action?

I did not attend Congress this year, but 38C3 is packed with interesting talks. Interestingly, or worryingly, the ongoing genocide in Gaza was almost absent from Congress (see especially this self-organized session which text is also available at alternate link. I have posted on the Fediverse about my hope to see the 38C3 call to fight against fascism to be applied to Israel, but there was very few support and no response (at the time of writing).

An official 38C3 poster stating Fuck charity / Love solidarity (with which I entirely concur) was tagged to add Free Gaza and this was covered by a Defend Israel sticker inspired by Mozilla graphics replacing the dinosaur with a tank. :scream_cat: I’m sorry, but I cannot fathom who would adequate a tank with solidarity (nor defense, FWIW: tank are a decisive offensive weapon).

If Israel’s defense is the genocide of the Palestinian people, we have a problem, Hamburg. Especially if the way to talk about it is not to talk about it. I am very worried that the CCC is deliberately putting on blinders and refuses to address the elephant in the room. You cannot wave red and black colors across the Congress venue, in your clubs and on your computers, claim and call for antifascist action, and turn your head from actual fascism being enacted in front of us all. So, please, my dear Chaos members, get your shit together and stop pretending not to see the problem.

Here is where I’m putting the talks I watched or want to watch, or that look interesting enough for me to dedicate some time to it.

Seen

My first pick came from the Fediverse and was Meredith Whitaker’s talk Feelings are Facts: Love, Privacy, and the Politics of Intellectual Shame - media.ccc.de where she reclaims the narrative of privacy in an interesting way (close to :ps: practice BTW) where love and solidarity mean something, and you can read corporate statements on “privacy” with a sharpened eye. – Should belong to the last category hereafter on Alternative Narratives.

  • The 38C3: Opening Ceremony - media.ccc.de frames the “Illegal Instructions” motto as a call to action to prepare against coming fascism, giving tools to resist and going through the history of Chaos Computer Club putting into perspective what system change has done before, and is going to do. “Not everyone will survive. People are already dying. […] It’s our duty to prevent that and to stop that.” “Let us talk about resistance. The fascist turn is not a law of nature.” “Form bonds, create solidarity and resilience.” “We have tools”, etc.

Just Curious

Stuff that caught my eye for one reason or another.

Topical

(No) Transition

About the (lack of) energetic/ecological transition…

Kritikal Mesh’ins

Related to Irde.st mesh networking stack, ERIS encrypted storage, and generally offline-first tech for private communication.

European Union

Related to the EU

Alternative Narratives

Stuff that challenges the global discourse about technology.

TBC (especially because there are so many things to triage, and the lack of concern for Gaza has very much disappointed me. So I’ll let others point me at the great stuff and eventually come to watch some of it.)

This is a bit reductive.
I think green methanol is a very dangerous proposition, it amounts to destroying all available biomass to produce so-called biofuels. Not only is it green washing, but a real threat to all living in the forest, cumulating to all other agressions on biodiversity.

Also I was not upset my proposal on mining was refused, I am truly shocked that the issues of mining were absolutely not addressed while they are clearly central to tech colonialism and the cause of unspoken genocides in DRC.
I am also extremely shocked that CCC binds to green washing and large ecological destructions without a blink.

I think their call for whatever resistance is political washing.
