# P · E · C · or Rooting Technologies

> [@Exploring community-based social media](https://ps.zoethical.org/t/exploring-community-based-social-media/8/1):
>
> p.s.: participation, engagement, and cooperation trace the aesthetic triangle of software freedom. We devise _singular technologies_ , or technologies that foster human agency and critical, intentional technology production, adapted to local usage. This _Third Technoscape_ refers to the third state, not the third world…

>
> An aesthetics as a line of action becomes visible as it scales across topics and situations, sharing processes information, tools.

> [@On another topic](https://ps.zoethical.org/t/79/1):
>
> Considering the specificity of software freedom, we define its aesthetics according to the social dynamics its ethic fosters: participation, engagement, and cooperation. In [Simondon](https://ps.zoethical.org/t/gilbert-simondon/75/1)’s view, technology develops its own aesthetics, that he ventures to call **techno-aesthetics** :
>
> > There’s a continuous spectrum binding aesthetics to technique.
>
> But contrary to common usage of the term aesthetics, usually confined to the sole domain of the arts and contemplation, Simondon insists on the practical specificity of techno-aesthetics:
>
> > Techno-aesthetics does not have contemplation for principal category. It’s in use, in action, that it becomes somehow orgasmic, a tactile mean, a driving force for stimulation.
>
> The concept of Libre Aesthetics was forged to insist on the collective aspects of software freedom, embedded in freedoms 2 and 3: sharing and hacking.

> [@On another topic](https://ps.zoethical.org/t/608/1):
>
> From our experience with free software, we work towards the formulation of Singular Technologies, or technologies that foster human agency and critical, intentional technology production, adapted to local usage: “rooting technologies”. Singular Technologies are conditioned by an active presence, and an engagement of the community. Their production involves many different aspects that hybridize them with life ensuring their diversity and perennity, finding different ways to strengthen participation, engagement, and cooperation among our resistance networks.

> ## Awakening Territories to Life
>
> This conference specifically aims at elaborating a **public discourse** on such aesthetics through accounts of collective experience at the crossing of collective practice and free technologies. When @natacha and @how proposed the [Journal of Peer Production](http://www.peerproduction.net/) to develop the concepts of the _Third TechnoScape_ and _Singular Technologies_ , we were offered to take an experimental approach to our contribution. This is the place where we want to share this work with you, crafting and carving these concepts from our experience and yours.
