One Woman* Less

@mariha is also drafting an open letter against discrimination and other human rights violations in free and open source software projects.

@Sing this is our alley.

So much of the open source community really is toxic for women … and even in situations that aren’t so bad, there are still major barriers.

It’s a little old, but Christina Dunbar-Harris’ Hacking Diversity is really excellent, not just about the challenges but about different approaches to making progress, including discussions of feminist servers and feminist hacker meet-ups as well as codes of conduct. One of her important observations that I quote a lot in the fediverse context is that the interpretations and norms of openness on which open source rests often run counter to the goal of providing more safety.

@mariha received threat of a possible legal action against her and is backing off from exposing her aggressors. This kind of situation, and the toxicity of the free software community at large, is starting to get on my nerves… @Sing, I’d like to discuss taking this into our own hands and kicking the anthill. We will get support, and will make enemies. Fuck patriarchy.

This is really really bad, and a clear attack on all the free software community. We cannot let this things happen without a say.
